AHU Sample Exam
Natural Health Facts
Description
This mini-sample course is set up to allow those who are new to online course management systems to explore what such an environment may be like upon enrolling at American Holistic University. Such course gives prospective students a text, such as the one below, from which they may be able to find answers. The last question is an inference question, which creates the need for students to use their own rationale in regards to practicality. The prospective student may go between the text and the exam, by printing the text, printing the exam, then transferring their answers to the Natural Health Facts Exam, where it will automatically be scored. Thus, such a mini-course is similar in nature to an actual online AHU course.

This is the text that one may use to answer the sample exam which follows.
The number one cause of death in the United States is arterial sclerosis, or cardiovascular disease. Number two is cancer. One of the best preventative measures include a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids found in foods. They help the cardiovascular system in a variety of ways. For example, omega 3s have also been found to lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and the risk of heart attack and stroke. Fish oil, flax seed, and canola oil have all been found to be rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
What type of cooking methods are considered to be the most healthy? Boiled food is the most healthy, in their having the least amount of carcinogenic byproducts. Baked foods are next best, while charred, grilled, or overly cooked foods, are less healthy, as they contain the most amount of carcinogenics in the blackened portions. Fried foods, which are often cooked in vegetable oil, are highly unhealthy as well, due to the fact that once vegetable oils reach approximately 485 degrees, they become carcinogenic. The only oils that do not become carcinogenic when heated to 485 degrees include grape seed oil and olive oil.
Vitamin C has been known to assist in boosting the immune system, and also improve one’s energy levels. Current research has concluded that the vitamin ester C is generally absorbable by 80 percent, when compared to normal vitamin C products, which have an absorption rate of only 20 percent. Vitamin C is also known to provide antioxidant properties, reducing free radical oxygen in the blood stream.
Antioxidants are known to help prevent disease by supporting the immune systems defense mechanisms. In other words, cancerous cells, or hypermetabolic cells, are created within a normal human body’s system on a regular basis. When a cell double-divides, it becomes cancerous. When this occurs, normally one’s immune system attacks such cells immediately, eliminating them before they become problematic, or develop into tumors. A human body rich in antioxidants has a higher chance of destroying hypermetabolic cells immediately. Antioxidants are found in most fruits and vegetables, and several supplements. Coenzyme Q-10 is a highly effective antioxidant which is manufactured by the human body, and it may also be taken as a supplement. CoQ-10 is one of the antioxidants studied for cancer prevention and the prevention and treatment of heart disease by the national institutes of health. In one research experiment, women with breast cancer who took 300mg per day had significant results in obtaining remission over those who had breast cancer and did conventional treatment.
Research also show it assists in reversing congestive heart failure.
Most antioxidants are manufactured by the body during normal sleep, peaking in production between the hours of 10:00pm and 2:00am. For this reason, it is important that one gets a good nights sleep, which includes this span of time.
Stress has been known to break down the immune system. In fact, the Holmes and Reile stress scale shows that an individual has a 50 percent higher chance of contracting an illness who has over 200 points in the scale. The scale is based on change factors which occur over a one year period of time. Each type of change which occurs in an individual’s life is given a number of points. For example, the death of a spouse is worth 100 points. In fact, the highest incidence of death, in relation to mind-body studies, occurs with individuals who lose a spouse, generally within the two or three years after one’s spouse dies.
Although medicine is often credited for life expectancy being increased among men and women, some studies show that life expectancy may decrease at some point in the near future, if the stress level in society is not reduced. With higher demands placed on the average person in society, the stress response, and the fight or flight response gets triggered more frequently. Medical studies show that frequent anger causes the cardiovascular system to become flooded with plaque and cholesterol, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, research showed that those that exercised immediately after experiencing a rush of anger managed to reduce such effects. Research also shows that individuals who practiced altered states of consciousness, such as self-hypnosis or meditation, approximately once, or optimally twice each day, were found to be the most healthy, as their stress response was triggered less frequently than individuals who did not practice altered states of consciousness.
Instructions for taking the sample test:
Now that you've read the text, click on "Home" in the upper leafthand corner, and click on "Natural Health Facts Exam." To take the sample test, the Moodle course management automated systems will ask you for a username and password. If you are new to the site, moodle will help you create your username through prompts, then your password will arrive by email. You should write these down in case you enroll as a student in the future, at which time you will use the same username and password, in addition to an enrollment key to the degree track of your choice. This will provide further access to the courses on this site and create a personalized "grade book," which stores your results. The courses in your degree track would require textbooks and exams that are similar to the sample test, but much more extensive. Good Luck!
